- Product Specification – Before determining the energy efficiency of a refrigerator, the refrigerator itself must be classified as belonging to the appropriate product class. There are seven separate categories of refrigerators, two of which apply to residential models and five of which apply to compact refrigerators. Once the fridge has been classified, testing may begin.
- Third-party Testing – Refrigerator manufacturers looking to use the Energy Star name and mark must submit their product for verification testing through a certification body recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). As part of this certification process, products must be tested by a laboratory recognized by the EPA to perform testing on residential refrigerators, compact refrigerators, and freezers.
- Qualifications – The main qualification criteria for an Energy Star-qualified refrigerator is the total amount of annual energy required to power the unit. This standard of energy efficiency, which is measured in kWh/year, varies among the different product classes. For instance, the maximum allowable annual energy use for a compact refrigerator with manual defrost is not the same as a residential refrigerator with the manual defrost.
